Hebburn Gym Benefits From £20k Investment

Gym users at Hebburn Swimming Pool are in for a treat as £20,000 worth of brand new cardiovascular equipment has just been installed.

Councillor Tracey Dixon, Lead Member for Culture and Wellbeing said: "The fitness room at the centre has gone from strength to strength over the last 12 months. Last year the Fitness Suite was extended resulting in admissions doubling to just under 8,500. Due to this fantastic increase in use all of the existing cardiovascular equipment has now been replaced with brand new equipment to meet the increased demand from the extra users."

The new equipment includes two steppers, two pursuit cycles, a recumbent cycle, three treadmills and two elliptical trainers from supplier Pulse - meaning that the equipment at all three Council leisure facilities: Monkton Stadium, Hebburn Swimming Pool and Temple Park Centre is now of the same type making it easier for those that use different centres. Time with a dedicated fitness instructor can be booked upon request for general advice, inductions and fitness plans.

Councillor Dixon added: "The successful increase in the number of stations at the Fitness Room backed up by the increased admissions has allowed for this new investment to replace all the cardiovascular equipment with brand new kit. I hope that with these new machines that the success continues to build and that more people take advantage of this great facility on their doorstep.

"With adult membership now at only £5 for the year for all three centres and sessions for the Fitness Room at Hebburn only £1.50 (Get Active Plus member rate) for a one hour session - there's no better time to join up."

RECORD NUMBERS VISIT BOROUGH LEISURE CENTRE

A record number of children and adults visited a Borough leisure centre to take advantage of the great range of fun activities over the February Half Term Holidays.

More than 15,000 people passed through the doors of Temple Park Centre, in John Reid Road, South Shields, during the school break. Membership numbers have also gone through the roof with 1,864 people signing up from 1 January to 29 February alone.

During Half Term, a number of exciting courses were held for youngsters, from cheerleading to mini-fencing. The free activity days are always a big attraction with fun inflatables and a mobile skate park among the highlights.

Meanwhile, the centre’s wide range of fitness classes are growing more and more popular and the gyms are attracting all ages and abilities. The café is also riding on the back of the health drive with more customers wanting healthy options from the menu.

Councillor Jim Sewell, Lead Member for Culture and Wellbeing, said: “More and more people are wanting to get fit and healthy and with record numbers of people visiting Temple Park Centre, it proves what a vital facility it is for the Borough. “Our ‘Let’s Do It’ campaign is all about getting more people to participate in physical activity. Whether it’s an outing with the whole family or with friends, our leisure centres are the place to be for fun, energetic days out, not only during the school holidays but at any time of the year.”

Even more fun activities and exciting courses for all the family are planned over the Easter break later this month. Under 16s can also get a free junior membership and therefore take advantage of the activities available at a reduced price.

Boxerfit Class Hits Knockout Total!

A fitness class held in memory of a tragic Jarrow youngster has raised over £1,000 for a North East charity.

Andi Tollett, who suffered from the muscle-wasting disease Duchenne muscular dystrophy, died from heart failure in March last year. The 14-year-old’s death was brought on by his condition.

Andi's cousin, Lisa Burr, is a regular participant at boxerfit classes held at the Temple Park Centre and Monkton Stadium.

And she organised a two-hour charity session at Temple Park, raising a knockout £1,157 for Butterwick Hospice, in Stockton. The Hospice provides care to children with life limiting illnesses, and supports their families.

Lisa, a teaching assistant at Mortimer Community College, said: "Myself and Andi were extremely close. I miss him every day. Andi loved family trips to Butterwick and loved going with friends for a holiday. I’m hoping to do a charity event every year to keep Andi's memory alive and raise money for the wonderful Butterwick Hospice.

"I've had so much help and support from Andi’s family, friends, Mortimer Community College, the Boxerfit instructors, and everyone who attended the charity night. Even those who could not attend were really generous with their sponsorship. It was a huge success. Over 100 people turned up and it was a great night."

Boxerfit classes have been going strong at Temple Park for over a decade, and are now available at Monkton Stadium. The sessions provide a great workout and involve boxing with pads and gloves, aerobics and circuit training.
